How To Get To The Top of Your Career Faster

Published by Abe David on

Since I began to follow sports religiously in 2009, I realized I had developed the ability to recount and analyze figures, data, events and facts associated with sports. At that time, I was unaware of the career potentials inherent in that ability. I was just passionate about sports, and enjoyed following it. But over time, I discovered that some individuals on television, newspapers, and other forms of media, were doing what I usually did effortlessly as a professional career.

I was intrigued by this discovery and decided to dig deeper. It was then that I saw sports journalism and analysis to be a viable career.

Having discovered my career path, the next question left to be answered was, “How do I get to the top of my career in record time?” I am faced with the familiar task of building a successful career using the skills and passion that I have built up over the years.

Success stories abound in today’s world of individuals who are on top of their game in their chosen careers. They took practical steps with their passion and have built remarkable careers. In this article, I’ll be sharing some of the simple but valuable insights I have learnt from some of these individuals and using to build my career.

You Start by Finding Your passion

A successful career is built by the relentless pursuit of those things that you are most passionate about. It is quite easy to spot an individual whose motivation for pursuing his career is out of passion. He simply displays a unique kind of energy and enthusiasm which fuels his productivity.

Putting your passion at the very root of your career pursuits will ensure that you are able to reach the top faster.

One of the country’s foremost sports journalists, at an award ceremony outlined his passion for sports as the driving force that has propelled him to keep working. He states very clearly; “I love sports, so it is easy for me to continue to strive to be the best at what I love”.

Put Your Grind into it

Every success story I know has the underlying factor of effort, backing it up. Nothing good ever comes easy.

To reach the top, you have to be prepared to put in the work that it requires. Results produced are usually proportional to the time and effort invested. The time invested in building your career and the amount of right work that you put in will definitely pay off.

Your Activity Should Produce Results

Activity is useless without results. Results are proof that efforts invested are yielding the desired outcome. Productivity in any activity is measured by the quality, quantity and consistency of the results that have been produced from that activity over time.

A successful career person is one that is able to produce the most consistent and measurable results. They are laser-focused on results not activity.

Find Yourself Good Mentors

Every path that exists, has been tread upon by many over time. Human history is such that no new idea/concept really exists. Every ‘new’ concept is simply an evolution of one that has existed in the past.

The advantage is that it becomes easier to walk a path with less mistakes by simply taking cues from the examples of those that have previously walked that same path.

Hardly would you find a successful career person who is not being mentored by a more experienced mentor. Finding yourself mentors who are ahead of you on the same or similar career path as you will definitely fast-track your career to the top.

Be Unique in Your Work

The beauty of human existence is in the diversity that it expresses. No two individuals can be exactly alike or do things alike. For example, the same mathematical problem presented to a couple of students, will be approached in different ways.

One sure ticket to the top of that career is to do things in a way that will make you stand out from everyone else. Find that thing that stands you out from others, and begin to pursue it relentlessly.

Fast-Track Your Career

If others made it to the top of their careers, so can you. You can start by finding what you are passionate about in an area that makes much of a difference and putting your all into it. Also leverage the experience and guidance of proven mentors and you’d be cruising at the top of your career before you know it. It’s just that simple.
